the novella (a workshop)
For those interested in literature’s middle child. Meeting on Zoom twice monthly. The workshop will be capped at 8 writers. Please contact me if you’re interested in an upcoming class.
We’ll read short books and talk about the form while working on our own novellas, whether starting from scratch, or with a work-in-progress. Although the novella is fiction, the workshop is suitable for shorter memoirs and hybrid narratives as well. Everyone will have the opportunity to receive feedback from the group. I will provide written feedback, personalized reading suggestions, and coaching on your project.
$360 (can be paid in three monthly installments) includes: 7 2-hour workshop meetings; a 45-minute, one-on-one meeting to talk about your work; and written feedback on 20-pages. Additionally, previous workshop participants receive the student rate (40% off) for a future manuscript consultation.
On last Saturdays of each month, participants are welcome to join the landscape workspace meetings (see below) for supportive scheduled writing sessions.
the landscape (a workspace)
For those looking to deepen their creative practice in community. Meeting on Zoom once a month on last Saturdays from 2-4:30 PM Pacific. Please contact me if you’re interested.
This is a virtual workspace, rather than a workshop. A time and place in which to gather with other artists and writers. Open to anyone, no matter the genre or medium. We’ll be using writing as our primary expressive tool in the space, whether that means you spend your writing time sketching out ideas for work in another medium or getting the words of a novel on the page.
We’ll begin each session with some discussion of what we’re working on (or want to be working on), what we’re reading or encountering that is feeding us, and connecting with each other. I’ll provide optional prompts or focal points to initiate generative writing sessions of an hour or more, with our screens off. We’ll end the session by setting individual intentions for practice—or future landmarks for our work—to carry into the next month.
This is a drop-in group, with light guidance and the energetic support of a like-minded cohort, with a suggested donation of $7 per session to help me keep my tech up & running. If you’re not in a position to donate, please sign up anyway.
There’s no cap on group size, as this is designed to be come-as-you-are, and will likely be a self-selective bunch. Sign up to be notified of upcoming sessions and I’ll send you the link.
MANUSCRIPT CONSULTATIONS
I’ve been teaching writing for over a decade. I’ve worked with writers in early stages through final drafts of short story collections, novels, and memoirs.
Some areas of expertise and interest for me are lyric memoir, autofiction, experimental/hybrid forms, speculative fiction, domestic horror/the uncanny, novellas/novelettes, feminist lit, and queer/trans lit. Place-centered, landscape-conscious, ecologically-present writing that centers the more-than-human world is also in my wheelhouse.
All consultations include a written response to your work, with recommendations and further reading list, as well as at least one virtual meeting of 45 minutes.
I cater my editorial and coaching services to each writer’s needs and budget. I charge a standard editorial base rate of $47/hr. or $0.03/word, with a sliding scale on a case-by-case basis. Previous students (from any workshop or class) receive a student rate of 40% off for a manuscript review.
If you’re interested in working with me, please fill out the form on my contact page and tell me about yourself, your project, and your budget. I’ll write up a proposal for you to consider.
